Generally speaking, a “domain name” is your “distinctive sign” on the Internet. It is the name by which your company, trademark, website or product shall be known on the Internet.

Top level domain names::
.COM, .NET and .ORG: Top level domains are not linked to a country and anyone can register one. They are the most commonly used on the Internet. Their use is not restricted and they are granted to the first applicant without having to submit a document or reference with the sought-after name. Although it is advisable to use them as follows:

• .com: The most important and most commonly used. They refer to commercial web pages. .
• .net: Related to networks. Information communities.
• .org: Related to organizations, associations and foundations.

Territorial domains:
These are related to countries. Some allow their domains to be registered. They work on the same level as top level com, net and org ones. These are very useful when other name options are taken.

Examples of these domain names are as follows: http://www.your-name.es (Spain) , http://www.your-name.nu (Niue), http://www.your-name.to (Tonga). http://www.your-name.cc (Cocos Islands), http://www.your-name.ws ( Samoa ).

There is a set annual fee, depending on the type of domain name. This is known as a "Registration Fee”. This fee covers a specific period of time and must be renewed otherwise you could lose the ownership of your domain name.
